CHAPTER SIXTEEN
"Who? Who is it, Aniyah? Can you give me the details?" Rushing out of the psychologistâs room, Caitlin exchanged an agonized glance with Nathan.
"The victim is Shawna Beatrix. She lives in Albuquerque, but was visiting locally. Her body was found dumped outside a friend's house. His name's Tony Adams. He went out the back door of his home just after eight this morning, to take out the trash before leaving for work, he said. She was there, lying on the step."
Caitlin hissed in a breath. This was catastrophic. Another death, another victim, and they were still no closer to finding out who had done this.
"Where's the scene?"
"I'm sending you the details. I'm sure I don't need to tell you the pressure is on, Caitlin." Now, she could hear the stress in their coordinator's voice. "I've been fielding a few calls this morning from officials higher up in New Mexico, and two people from the local press have called, too. They're looking for answers, urgently, and more than that, theyâre looking for someone to blame. If the killer isnât found, then weâre going to get the fingers pointed at us, for being slow and inefficient."
Gritting her teeth, Caitlin replied, âWeâll do our best.â
âI know you will,â Aniyah reassured her, but she still sounded stressed.
Where would answers be found? Were there going to be any at the third crime scene?
A moment later, the address pinged into her message folder. Thanking Aniyah, Caitlin hung up and rushed for the car.
"This address is in Featherville," she said, surprised, checking the map. That was two towns over, and about twenty miles away. It was exactly as the psychologist had predicted and she had feared. The killer was looking further afield in his desire to kill at all costs.
He was forging ahead and leaving them behind. Now, they had to scramble to catch up, and to catch him.
